WELCOME TO JCSA
Dear Friends in the Lord!
These days, we are living through the days of surprises in the Church and the Society!
The announcement of the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI after much prayer and discernment
seems to have sent shock waves through the Catholic Church, even the secular world.
His concern for the good of the Church surpassed all other considerations of 1600
year old tradition. The love and esteem for the Supreme Pontiff has never been greater
among the faithful than at this time.
As the white smoke billowed out of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, another surprise
was in store for the multitude of faithful who had been patiently waiting for the
last few days. Against all the predictions of the media and the expectations of
many for a younger leader, Jorge Maria Bergoglio, a 77 old prelate was elected the
Successor of St. Peter. And to cap it all, he was the first Jesuit Pope and the
first non-European Pope in 600 years! His choice of a simple name ‘Francis’ seems
to be very symbolic of what we can look forward to during his papacy. He has always
lived very close to his people, travelling by public transport and serving meals
at the soup kitchen and cooking his own supper. In his first public address he expressed
his desire to work closely with his fellow bishops and the lay faithful. His leadership
seems to be pastoral and spiritual, devoid of any ostentation. Can he be the harbinger
of the ‘emerging new Church’ for our days?
