Youth

The Jesuit Youth Ministry - South Asia (JYMSA) was officially constituted by the
JCSA in 1994. The vision of this ministry, in the light of our option for faith
and justice, is to accompany the youth especially the unorganized and the marginalized
in their integral growth and their empowerment, to contribute to the creation of
a more just and fraternal world based on the Gospel values and the liberative forces
of other Religions.
OBJECTIVES
- To coordinate existing youth works, and to provide integral growth opportunities
to the youth through various programmes and experiences.
- To empower, support and guide the oppressed and the unreached youth, especially
from the marginalized groups such as the Dalits, Tribals and Women.
- To ensure effective development and mobilization of the youth through various ministries,
especially the educational, pastoral and social apostolates,
- To create greater awareness among Jesuits and others and to train and motivate the
Jesuits and others for the youth apostolate.
- To network and collaborate with like-minded groups and movements.
YMSA Annual Report 2007-08
New Initiatives:
Province youth commission meetings:-
During the annual JYMSA meeting of the province youth coordinators held at Jaipur
in March, 2008, a lot of emphasis was laid on the province youth coordinators constituting
their province youth commissions and regularly organizing their province commission
meetings. There has been a significant change as a number of province youth commissions
that were almost defunct or existing only on paper (read province catalogue) have
been activated. Another noteworthy feature is the composition of the members of
the province youth commissions, which now consists of members from other commissions/apostolates.
MAGIS08:-
An Ignatian program hosted by the Australian province and other Ignatian associates
as a preparation for the World Youth Day to be held at Sydney, Australia in July
2008. It offers young adults an opportunity to deepen their relationship with God
and deepen their Christian values. It is a sharing of Ignatian spirituality and
the discernment that fosters a 'faith that does justice' inviting them to share
their talents and to understand others across cultures. It guides to accompany the
youth in discerning God's hopes for their lives.
The program will consist of 'experiments' an Ignatian Gathering and participation
in the World Youth Day events in Sydney.
49 participants
will be representing the South Asian Assistancy for MAGIS08 and WYD
International Trial Experiment
Madurai Province hosted this experiment held on the lines of MAGIS08 at Elakurichy,
a pilgrim centre with a shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Refuge from January 26 -
31, 2008. 34 participants that included 8 from Cambodia, 9 from Australia and the
rest from different provinces of our Assistancy participated.
Future plans:
JYMSA organizes a MAGIS experiment every year for the youth of the Assistancy. Andhra
province has volunteered to host the MAGIS program in January, 2009. Our aim is
to try and ensure that each of our 4 zones make an effort to conduct this program
in their respective zone every year. This will enable more youth from the neighbouring
provinces to participate in these programs and instill some spirit in them.
Visiting the provinces and interacting with the Jesuits of different apostolates
and even the youth was very helpful in getting to know each other. I intend to continue
these visits during the course of the coming year.
