Ignatian Scholars Reflect on the First Week of the Spiritual Exercises at Pune Colloquium

The Jesuit Ignatian Scholars Association (JIGSA) held its annual Ignatian Scholars’ Colloquium at De Nobili College, Pune, bringing together 30 Jesuit scholar and students from across South Asia to reflect on “The First Week of the Spiritual Exercises in Dialogue with Today’s Context.”

Fr. Stany D’Souza, POSA, opened the gathering with a call to engage Ignatian spirituality  creatively in light of the Society’s ongoing reimagining in South Asia. The keynote by Rolphy Pinto SJ highlighted the adaptability of the Spiritual Exercises in interreligious and pluralistic settings, echoing the first Universal Apostolic Preference.

Scholarly papers explored themes such as prayer dynamics, discernment of spirits, interreligious
dialogue, the reality of sin and forgiveness, and the identity of the seeker. Each presentation
prompted lively discussion on how the Exercises can address contemporary challenges, from secularism to ecological concerns.

The colloquium concluded with plans to publish this year’s papers and to carry forward the dialogue in next year’s gathering. The event left participants renewed in their mission to “show the way to God” through Ignatian discernment.
